Gynecomastia Surgery

Male Breast Reduction

Gynecomastia surgery, also called reduction mammaplasty, reduces breast size in men, flattening and enhancing the chest contours. Gynecomastia is a condition in men involving overdeveloped or enlarged breasts. It can occur at any age and can be the result of hormonal changes, heredity, obesity or the use of certain drugs.

The condition is characterized by excess localized fat, excess glandular tissue development, and at times excess breast skin. It can present itself unilaterally (one breast) or bilaterally (both breasts).

Gynecomastia can cause emotional discomfort and impair one’s self-confidence. Some men may even avoid certain physical activities and intimacy simply to hide their condition.

FAQs about Gynecomastia Surgery

Who is a good candidate for gynecomastia surgery?

Candidates for gynecomastia surgery are men who are bothered by the feeling that their breasts are too large and whose condition cannot be corrected through alternative medical treatments. Ideally breast development has stabilized and candidates are physically healthy and of a relatively normal weight and not have a life-threatening illness or medical conditions that can impair healing.

How soon will I see the results from gynecomastia surgery?

Results from gynecomastia surgery are immediately visible. Any surgical treatment to correct gynecomastia will require incisions. While most incision lines are concealed within natural contours, some may be visible and are a necessary result of male breast reduction surgery. Over time, post-surgical swelling will resolve and incision lines will fade and final results may take up to 6 months to achieve.

What is the expected recovery time for gynecomastia surgery?

Recovery time for gynecomastia surgery is highly dependent on individual variability and the extent of the surgery. Before leaving the center, you will be given specific instructions on how to care for your treated area, and when to follow-up with Dr. Azad. Most patients should be able to return to work a few days after the surgery and resume most activities after eight weeks.
