Considering An Arm Lift Surgery? Here's What To Expect During Recovery

Updated: Oct 10, 2022

Brachioplasty, commonly known as arm lift surgery, is a plastic surgery procedure that removes excess skin and fat from the upper arm between the elbow and underarm. The procedure can provide a more toned and lean look that can forever change the appearance of saggy arms.

While the results can be dramatic, arm lift surgery is an outpatient procedure with a relatively short recovery. However, every patient is different and their experience with the recovery process can vary. If you’re considering having an arm lift surgery in Orlando with Dr. Azad, here is a general recovery timeline.

1 to 3 Days Post-Op: Most patients experience light to moderate pain following their arm lift surgery which is usually well controlled with prescribed medication and/or over the counter anti-inflammatories. Immediately after your arm lift surgery in Orlando, Dr. Azad and his medical team will bandage and wrap the surgical site, resulting in a decreased range of motion.

We recommend that our arm lift surgery patients wear a loose button-up shirt until otherwise directed by Dr. Azad for ease of recovery. It is also important to note that all patients will be instructed not to wear any jewelry or rings prior to the procedure and will need to continue to do so until the swelling has resolved.

1 Week Post-Op: The swelling and bruising of the arms should have decreased but can still be apparent and could continue for 2 or 3 more weeks. However, most patients report that the pain has subsided to the point where they no longer require any pain medication.

10 Days Post-Op: Good news - stitches, drainage tubes, and bandages are all removed and your arm mobility will increase. Most of our patients are able to return to work and can conduct normal daily activities, including showering. However, Dr. Azad will still recommend that you avoid stretching or lifting heavy objects and that you wear a compression garment to continue support of the healing process.

2 Weeks Post-Op: Dr. Azad usually recommends that patients begin some type of scar therapy consisting of either scar cream or a silicone-based tape product. Dr. Azad will go over the best options for you during your consultation and post-operative appointments.

4 to 6 Weeks Post-Op: Pretty much all swelling and bruising will have subsided, revealing the final results of your arm lift surgery. Dr. Azad will usually advise that patients no longer need to wear compression garments and give them the go-ahead to gradually resume exercise. However, we still recommended that our patients continue their scar management for at least the next 4-6 months.

During your initial consultation with Dr. Azad, you will have the opportunity to express all of your cosmetic goals. You should come into the consultation prepared to discuss your complete medical history and go over any questions you may have regarding the arm lift surgery.

Dr. Azad and his entire staff is here to help you achieve the best results and make your experience as easy and comfortable as possible. To find out more about arm lift surgery in Orlando, contact us today!
