Scar Revision Surgery

Conveniently located to serve the areas of Orlando, FL

Scar revision is surgery to improve or reduce the appearance of scars so that it is more consistent with your surrounding skin tone and texture. Scars are visible signs that remain after a wound has healed. They are unavoidable results of injury or surgery, and their development can be unpredictable. The amount of scarring may be determined by the wound size, depth, and location; the person’s age; heredity; and skin characteristics, including color (pigmentation).

Scars may be raised or recessed, different in color or texture from surrounding healthy tissue, or particularly noticeable due to their size, shape, or location. Treatment options vary from simple topical treatments, and minimally invasive procedures, to surgical revision based on the degree and type of scarring.

A scar cannot be completely erased but scar revision can improve a poorly healed scar and result in a more pleasing cosmetic appearance.

FAQ

What kind of scars are good candidates for scar revision?

There are several types of scars, but scars that are good candidates for revision include scars that have thickened with time, scars that obstruct normal function and movement, scars that lie at an angle to the normal tension lines of the skin, and keloids, which is an abnormal scar that is thicker, a different texture, and color than the rest of the skin.

How long after a scar has formed is scar revision an option?

Scar revision may be performed any time after a scar has formed. Ideally, for optimal tissue improvement, a patient should wait until the surrounding tissues have softened. No matter how old a scar, whether from a previous surgery, biopsy, injury, burns, or excision, there is the possibility for improvement.

How soon will I see the results from scar revision?

Often when a patient comes to see a doctor about scar revision, the scar has faded to a large extent since the injury was sustained. Initially, after the procedure, the scar will be quite visible from the fresh incision, but over time it will considerably improve and become less and less visible. It can take up to a year for the scar to fully heal.

What is the expected recovery time for scar revision surgery?

Recovery time for scar revision is highly dependent on individual variability and the extent of the surgery. Before leaving the center, you will be given specific instructions on how to care for your treated area, and when to follow-up with Dr. Azad. Most patients should be able to return to work a few days after the surgery and resume most activities after a few weeks.
