Does Fat Come Back After Liposuction?

Updated: Jul 4, 2021

Dr. Azad does a lot of liposuction in Orlando, and we are often asked, "can fat come back after liposuction?" The answer is no. The fat cells that are removed with liposuction do not come back. However, there are a few things that you should understand about fat cells and the liposuction procedure itself.

About Human Fat Cells

Adult humans have a fixed number of total fat cells within their bodies, determined by personal genetic makeup. Once your body is fully grown, the entire number of fat cells doesn't normally change. However, fat cells don't stay the same size throughout your life. As you gain or lose weight, fat cells will grow or shrink in response.

Now, here is where you may start to get confused. Fat cells have a life cycle and don't live forever. Each year, the body generates new fat cells to replace older cells that have died. Your body is constantly creating new fat cells, but the total number of fat cells within the body always stays constant. As one cell dies, another takes its place.

Exceptions

There are two exceptions to this rule: intense weight gain or liposuction. When you gain an enormous amount of weight and your fat cells reach their maximum size, your body can split to create new cells.

The other exception is liposuction, which physically removes the fat cells in your body. Once eliminated, the fat doesn't grow back. So, if you reduce the total number of fat cells in your body, they're gone forever.

Liposuction

Liposuction results are instant and permanent; this makes our procedure for liposuction in Orlando one of the most popular cosmetic procedures. In combination with a healthy lifestyle, liposuction results can be more substantial than weight loss.

The ideal candidate for liposuction is somebody in great health, whose weight is comparatively stable. Liposuction permanently removes fat cells, but it doesn't guarantee that you'll permanently have your post-liposuction body. A healthy diet and exercise routine are crucial to maintaining the results that you want.

Post-op Liposuction

Liposuction changes your body contour by eliminating fat in certain areas. If you do gain weight following liposuction, you'll still have the same contoured shape. For example, if you have liposuction done on your stomach, and you gain weight, your stomach will still be flatter than it might have been at that new weight without liposuction.

Should you gain weight following liposuction, don't worry - like we said before, you will still maintain the same contoured shape. A healthy diet and some exercise will get you back on track, and you will have your post-liposuction body in no time.

Liposuction can be a great procedure to utilize if you're looking to rid yourself of some fat cells, especially ones that genetics gave you. If you're looking to have liposuction in Orlando, call us today to set up an initial consult.
