Plastic surgery is most often associated with women, however, according to the 2015 Americans Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) Cosmetic Surgery National Data Bank Statistics, plastic surgery is also becoming increasingly popular among men. The statistics report shows that men underwent 196,620 surgical procedures (10.3% of the total number of surgeries performed) and 1,023,322 non-surgical procedures (9.4% of all these procedures performed last year).

Liposuction

In terms of surgical procedures, it is no surprise that liposuction was the most popular plastic surgery for men. In 2015, 13% of liposuction cases performed were on men, who despite trying several exercise regimens and diets to remove stubborn fat deposits, turned to liposuction as a method to achieve a smoother and more toned look. Removing excess fat from men’s abdomens, love handles, and chest results in a thinner, V-contoured body and chest, and reduces the size and thickness of the waistline.

Rhinoplasty

Another popular cosmetic surgical procedure for men is rhinoplasty, also referred to as a nose job, with men accounting for 21.3% of these surgeries in 2015. A rhinoplasty improves the proportions of the nose by creating facial harmony, and can also improve impaired breathing by correcting structural defects in the nose.

Blephroplasty

Eyelid surgery, also known as blephroplasty, is the third most popular aesthetic surgery for men, with 30,969 procedures performed in 2015, approximately 18.1% of the total performed. Sagging or drooping eyelids occur with increasing age, but eyelid surgery can rejuvenate the area surrounding your eyes. Surgery can be performed on either the upper and lower lids, and can treat loose or sagging skin that creates folds or disturbs the natural contour of the eyelid. These folds can sometimes impair vision and cause excess fatty deposits that appear as puffiness in the eyelids.

Breast Reduction

The fourth most popular surgical procedure for men in 2015 was male breast reduction for the treatment of Gynecomastia, accounting for 30,464 procedures performed last year. This was an increase of 26% from 2014, and 173% since ASAPS initiated its survey in 1997. Gynecomastia, also referred to as enlarged male breast tissue (a.k.a. man boobs), is swelling of the breast tissue in boys or men. Though Gynecomastia is not a medically serious problem, it can cause embarrassment and impair one’s self-confidence. Cosmetic male breast reduction surgery can aid immensely by creating a more masculine chest appearance.

Facelift

Last, but not least, coming in at number five on the list is the facelift, with 10.8% of the procedures in 2015 (13,726) being performed on men. A facelift improves visible signs of aging in the face and neck by removing unwanted wrinkles and sagging skin by tightening the skin of the face.

In terms of nonsurgical procedures, men accounted for 9.4% of injectables including Botox®, Radiesse®, Scuplta®, and Juvederm®; 8.7% of skin rejuvenation such as peels, resurfacing, microdermabrasion, and skin tightening; and 10.8% of other procedures such as tattoo removal, hair removal, and non-surgical fat reduction. According to the statistics, men had more than 1.2 million surgical and non-surgical procedures performed in 2015, (9.5% of the total). Aesthetic plastic surgery among men has increased over 325% since the survey was first conducted by the ASAPS in 1997.
