Remove Stretch Marks With a Tummy Tuck?

Updated: Sep 20, 2022

Women are often looking for a method to remove stretch marks. Skin that stretches too quickly and/or loses flexibility as a result of pregnancy or significant weight gain and loss can show damage from insufficient collagen in the form of stretch marks. Stretch marks take the form of stripes, lines, and irregular streaks and appear in shades of pink, purple, white, and gray.

Many women turn to creams and/or laser therapy as a less invasive way to try to combat unsightly stretch marks, but the results are not always as effective as most hope for. A tummy tuck can drastically reduce the appearance of stretch marks in addition to smoothing the abdomen and creating a more aesthetically pleasing silhouette.

An abdominalplasty (tummy tuck) is an effective method for removing stretch marks because the majority of stretch marks appear in the lower abdomen. The procedure removes the redundant skin from slightly above the navel to the pubic region and the skin above the belly button is stretched down to cover the pubic region and contoured to fit the lower abdomen. Stretch marks above the belly button, hips, and/or buttocks will not be removed, but visibility may be decreased due to the skin being tightened and moved. Depending on the patient and the extent of lose skin, the tummy tuck procedure can be accommodate for additional skin excision for greater results in removing stretch marks.
