Procedure
Upon your arrival, you will be led to a private room where your skin will be cleansed and general anesthesia will be administered. Once the anesthesia has taken effect, Dr. Azad will begin the procedure by performing liposuction to remove any excess fat before performing your tummy tuck.
Dr. Azad will first administer a tumescent solution into the areas receiving liposuction through small incisions. The tumescent solution is composed of epinephrine, saline, and a local anesthetic to minimize bleeding, swell the fat cells, and further numb the treatment area. (1) Through the same incisions, Dr. Azad will insert a suction tube called a cannula. He will move the cannula back and forth to gently break up and suction out the stubborn fat.
After removing the appropriate amount of fat, Dr. Azad will make an incision for the tummy tuck, with the exact length and placement depending on the type of tummy tuck he is performing. (4) If you have muscle separation, or ‘diastasis recti,’ Dr. Azad will bring your abdominal muscles back together with sutures. He will also remove redundant skin to restore a smooth and defined appearance. If necessary, he will also create a “new” belly button for you, using advanced techniques to avoid external scarring.
Recovery
Your recovery will vary depending on the extent of your procedure. Dr. Azad will provide you with a set of comprehensive recovery instructions and make sure you know what to expect.
During your recovery, you will need to take time away from work and other commitments to focus on healing. It is normal to experience some swelling and/or bruising after your combined procedure—these effects will subside on their own, but may be managed using medications prescribed by Dr. Azad and by following aftercare instructions.
Dr. Azad asks that you attend follow-up appointments so that he can monitor your healing progress. After approximately two weeks or sooner, you may be able to return to work—depending on the nature of your job—but you will need to refrain from strenuous or high-impact activities until Dr. Azad approves.
